Frequently Asked Questions...
Is there a tool that I can use to tell the difference between gems and glass or beads in costume jewelry?
I have several pieces of high-end costume jewelry and/or or antique that may have real gems and maybe even small diamonds in them. Is there a way to tell if the gems are real or just cut class. I don't want to take the pieces to a jeweler for an appraisal. I want to be able to look at pieces at antique stores, estate sales to see if I can get a good deal???
Answer:
Not that you can haul around and not that costs little enough to make it pay off. A small jewelers loupe (magnifier) and some education/practice looking at the stuff is your best bet. And learning which costume jewelry, such as the Eisenberg my mother wore in the 50's, is worth more than others, although all glass.
